He met Kathy Chitty on 12 April 1964 at the very first English folk club he played, the Railway Inn Folk Club in Brentwood, Essex. She was 17, he was 22 and they fell in love. Later that year they visited the US together, touring around mainly by bus. Kathy returned to England on her own with Simon returning to her some weeks later. When he was back in London he recorded the album The Paul Simon Songbook that included “Kathy’s Song”, and had a photo of Simon and Kathy on the cover. Also included in the album was another version of “The Sound of Silence”. (Wiki)

“The Happy Wanderer” (“Der fröhliche Wanderer” or “Mein Vater war ein Wandersmann“) is a popular song by Friedrich-Wilhelm Möller written shortly after World War II. It is often mistaken for a German folk song, but it is actually an original composition. His sister Edith Möller conducted a small amateur children’s and youth choir in Schaumburg County, Northern Germany, internationally named Obernkirchen Children’s Choir, in Germany named Schaumburger Märchensänger.

In 1953, BBC Radio aired the choir’s winning performance at Llangollen International Eisteddfod, an annual arts festival in north-east Wales. The broadcast turned the cheerful encore into an instant hit. On January 22, 1954, the song entered the UK singles chart, and would stay on the chart – only a Top 12 at the time – for 26 non-consecutive weeks. With BBC Radio’s strong international influence, “The Happy Wanderer” suddenly turned up everywhere, e.g. as the winning song of the 1955 calypso road march season of the Trinidad Carnival (prompting protest that from now on, only calypsoes should be chosen over foreign music).

The amateur choir, many of whose original members were war orphans, turned into an unlikely international phenomenon in the following years. The group performed on countless international tours under the name Obernkirchen Children’s Choir, with performances on TV shows such as The Ed Sullivan Show (November 29, 1964, and December 11, 1966).

The song’s original German lyrics have been translated into several languages, and it has since become a choir classic. The English lyrics were written by Antonia Ridge. Milton DeLugg wrote a famous arrangement, and is sometimes falsely credited as the composer of the song. (wikipedia)

   A E7
I love to go a-wandering along the mountain track,

    E7 D Bm D E7 A
And as I go, I love to sing, my knapsack on my back.

Refrain:

       E7 A
Val-da-ree, val-da-rah,

       E7 A D A D
Val-da-ree, val-da-rah ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha

       E7 A
Val-da-ree, val-da-rah,

    D E7 A
My knapsack on my back.

I love to wander by the stream that dances in the sun;
So joyously it calls to me, 霤ome, join my happy song!?
Refrain:
Val-da-ree, val-da-rah,
Val-da-ree, val-da-rah ha-ha-ha-ha-ha
Val-da-ree, val-da-rah, come, join my happy song.

I wave my hat to all I meet, and they wave back to me,
And blackbirds call so loud and sweet from ev'ry green wood tree.

Refrain:
Val-da-ree, val-da-rah,
Val-da-ree, val-da-rah ha-ha-ha-ha-ha
Val-da-ree, val-da-rah, from ev'ry green wood tree.

Oh, may I go a-wandering until the day I die;
Oh, may I always laugh and sing beneath God's clear blue sky,.

Refrain:
Val-da-ree, val-da-rah,
Val-da-ree, val-da-rah ha-ha-ha-ha-ha
Val-da-ree, val-da-rah, beneath God's clear blue sky.

“Wonderful World” (sometimes referred to as “(What a) Wonderful World“, but unrelated to the Louis Armstrong song “What a Wonderful World“) was written in the late 1950s by soul music pioneer Sam Cooke along with songwriters Lou Adler and Herb Alpert, although at first attributed to the pseudonym Barbara Campbell which was the maiden name of Cooke’s mother, and first recorded by Cooke in 1959 for Cooke’s self-titled debut album. The song was released as a single in 1960, reaching #12 in the US and #27 in the UK. A bouncy love song, the lyrics have the singer disavowing knowledge of academic subjects (the song is often referred to informally by its first line, “Don’t know much about history”), but affirming the object of his affection “but I do know that I love you”. Herman’s Hermits had major hit with an uptempo version of the song (omitting one verse) in the mid-1960s, which reached #4 in the U.S. and #7 in the UK. The Hermits’ version was, according to singer Peter Noone and guitarist Keith Hopwood, done as a tribute to Cooke upon his death.

            G Em G7 C Cm G
There are places I'll remember all my li--ife though some have changed,

        G Em G7 C Cm G
Some forever not for better, some have go--one and some remain.

            Em C F G
All these places had their moments, with lovers and friends I still can recall,

          Em A7 Cm G D
Some are dead and some are living, in my life I've loved them all.

        G Em G7 C Cm G
But of all these friends and lovers, there is no one compares with you,

           G Em G7 C Cm G
And these memories lose their meaning, when I think of love as something new.

          Em C F G
Though I know I'll never lose affection for people and things that went before,

   Em A7 Cm G D
I know I'll often stop and think about them, in my life I'll love you more.

(Piano/Harpsichord solo)

   G Em G7 C Cm G

Though I know I'll never lose affection for people and things that went before,

“Hey Jude” was the first single from The Beatles’ record label Apple Records. Over seven minutes in length, “Hey Jude” was at the time the longest single ever to top the British charts.[2] It also spent nine weeks as number one in the United States—the longest run at the top of the American charts for a Beatles single.
“Hey Jude” begins with a verse-bridge structure based around McCartney’s vocal performance and piano accompaniment; further details are added as the song progresses to distinguish sections. After the fourth verse, the song shifts to a fade-out coda that lasts for more than four minutes.
Cats in the Cradle

My [E]child arrived just the [G]other day; he [A]came to the world in the [E]usually way. but there were [E]planes to catch and [G]bills to pay. [A] __ He learned to walk while I [E]was away. He was [D]talking ‘fore I [A]knew it. And [Bm]as he grew he said, [G]I’m gonna [Bm]be like [E]you, Dad. [G]You know I’m gonna [BM]be like [E]you.

(And the [E]cat’s in the cradle and the [D]silver spoon, [G]Little boy blue and the [A]man in the moon. [E]When you coming home? dad, I [D]don’t know when. [G]We’ll get to[Bm]gether then [E]. You [G]know we’ll have a [Bm]good time [E]then. )

My son turned ten just the other day. He said, Thanks for the ball, Dad. Come on, let’s play. Can you teach me to throw? I said, Not today. I got a lot to do. He said, That’s okay. And he walked away but he smiled to another kid he said, I’m gonna be like him, yeah. You know I’m gonna be like him.

Well, he came from college just the other day, So much like a man I just had to say, I’m proud of you. Could you sit for a while? He shook his head and he said with a smile, What I’d really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys. See you later. Can I have them please?

I’ve long since retired, my son’s moved away. I called him up just the other day. I’d like to see you, if you don’t mind. He said, I’d love to, Dad, if I could find the time. He said, I’d love to, Dad, if I could find the time. You see my new job’s a hassle and the kids have the flu, But it’s sure nice talking to you, Dad. It’s been sure nice talking to you.

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me, He’d grown up just like me. My boy was just like me.
